Project Overview
Selwyn Domain is a popular coastal park in Mission Bay, Auckland, known for its expansive green space, playground, picnic facilities, and close proximity to the beach. A key feature of the park is its public toilets and changing rooms—originally built in 1934—which serve thousands of visitors year-round, particularly during the busy summer months. Auckland Council recently upgraded these ageing brick facilities to meet modern expectations while retaining the building’s historic exterior.

Project Challenges
Given the facility’s constant exposure to sea air, sand, and heavy foot traffic, the bathroom upgrades required robust, vandal-resistant solutions that could withstand environmental wear and public misuse, while also being easy to maintain and install.
MacDonald Industries Technical Consultant, Zaina Ali, noted:
“This type of facility demands a commercial-grade specification. It is a high-use public space, and traditional fittings simply will not perform or last.”

Product Solutions

KWC Stainless Steel Wall-Mounted Toilet Pans and Urinals
KWC’s stainless steel sanitaryware was chosen for its strength, resistance to corrosion, and sleek appearance. These units are designed specifically for high-use environments where durability and vandal resistance are essential. Wall-mounted toilet pans and urinals provide easy access for cleaning and help maintain hygiene in busy public settings.

Wisa Concealed Cisterns with Vandal-Resistant Face Plates
To enhance security and reliability, Wisa concealed cisterns were installed alongside the toilet pans. Housing the mechanical components behind the wall prevents tampering, and only the MacDonald Industries stainless steel face plate with flush-mounted vandal-resistant buttons is exposed—reducing the risk of damage and misuse.

Delabie Temposoft Time-Flow Basin Taps
Water conservation is a top priority in public restrooms. Delabie’s Temposoft timed-flow basin taps address this by automatically shutting off after 7 seconds—minimising water wastage while still allowing sufficient time for handwashing. These taps feature a soft-touch mechanism, making them accessible for children, the elderly, and people with reduced mobility. Built from brass with reinforced internal components and a streamlined, vandal-resistant design, these taps are engineered for longevity in public settings.

Accessible Bathroom Fitout
The accessible bathrooms were fitted with compliant, high-quality products, including:

  • Delabie Backrests

  • MacDonald Grab Bars

  • KWC Franke Basins and Toilets

MacDonald Industries’ in-depth knowledge of NZS4121 standards ensured all accessible components met code while remaining suitable for the demanding, high-traffic environment of Selwyn Domain.

Outcome
The upgraded toilet and changing room facilities at Selwyn Domain now offer a modern, durable, and accessible experience for park visitors, ensuring functionality and resilience for years to come. MacDonald Industries is proud to have supported Auckland Council in revitalising this much-loved coastal amenity.
